Literature Text

The leaves are changing. They fall from the trees as if plucked by an invisible hand, and swirl in tiny whirlpools of fire on the charcoal street. The scent of wet concrete wafts up from the ground. Next to the sidewalk is a small, grassy area beneath a gnarled Japanese maple, and underneath this tree is stretched the most beautiful, graceful form that Cid Highwind has ever known.

Vincent is now a sentiment to Halloween. His white skin and red eyes make his appearance not unlike that of a vampire or demon; the orange leaves tangle in thick, black hair. He's lounging in the grass as Cid approaches, eyes glazed over, staring up at the mottled grey sky.

"Hey," Cid calls, stepping into the grass and approaching the sprawled form beneath the tree. "We oughta get back, or you're gonna get all wet." Vincent stretches, and when he speaks, his voice is caught in a yawn.

"I don't mind getting wet." His fingers move on the grass, playing the deep green blades like a piano. "The grass is already wet, anyway." He pauses, looking up at Cid expectantly. "You should sit down for a while."

"I ain't got time for that shit, and neither do you," Cid huffs, but Vincent's expression wins him over. He sits indian-style on the ground near the tree's trunk, and suddenly, the crimson-clad man next to him is a cat, resting his head on Cid's thigh and making a small, contented sound of approval. When the rain starts falling, Cid hears it before he feelsl it, a quiet but defined series of thumps on the lenses of his goggles. He looks down at Vincent's face, watching the raindrops pound against the pale skin of his forehead and nose. Vincent's eyes remain closed, the water seeping down onto the lids and falling from the corners like tears.

"You look like you're cryin'," Cid says teasingly.

"What do I have to cry about?" Vincent asks, a smile in his voice. But as soon as the words pass his lips, he stops short, as if only just realizing the extent of what he's said. "What... do I have to cry about?" He looks up at Cid, then sits up quickly. "I have nothing to cry about. I'm happy." He moves closer to Cid, taking one of his hands. "Do you know how long it's been since I've been able to say that?"

"Too long," Cid murmurs, taking Vincent's face in his hands and offering up a deep kiss. Vincent sighs through his nose at the contact. Rain continues to beat down on them, and the drops grow bigger and bigger with every passing moment. Thunder gurgles in the clouds. The leaves on the grass and sidewalk are getting soggy. Vincent's hair is plastered to his forehead, but Cid's hands brush it back.

"Way too long."
A very short Valenwind 'moment', so to speak. Something to welcome the autumn with open arms.

EDIT: WHEW. The tense was all whacked up there. Fixed.

The story is so romantic; it inspires me to do some Cid and Vincent fanart now. :D
